Well it's been a few years since Wainwright's guide books were first published,
so I guess that his division into seven regions has stood the test of time and
will suffice for my purpose.
The map shows the seven regions which Wainwright created. Click on a
region to review all the fells listed by Wainwright in his guide books.
Northern Fells
circular in shape, is completely severed by all other fells within the Lake
District by Bassenthwaite Lake, the Vale of Keswick and the low country of the
Glenderamackin River
North Western Fells
occupy a compact area, elliptical in shape, with clearly defined boundaries
formed by the River Derwent and River Cocker
Central Fells
occupy the area between Borrowdale in the west down to Stake Pass and across
Great Langdale in the south bordering upon Dunmail Raise in the east through St
John's Vale to Keswick
Eastern Fells
lie between Thirlmere and Dunmail Raise in the west and Ullswater and Kirstone
Pass in the east
Far Eastern Fells
lie to the east of Kirkstone Pass & to the south east of Ullswater
Western Fells
lie between Crummock Water, Buttermere and Honister Pass and Sty Head Pass to
Wastwater
Southern Fells
lie to the southeast of Wastwater and Borrowdale and to the south of Great
Langdale
